TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In discussion held at the Jakarta National University on Saturday, April 25, 2015, former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that the mental revolution initiated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is different from that believed by Marxism followers.
“The mental revolution term was popular in the 18th century when German philosopher Karl Marx raised the issue,” Susilo said.
Karl Marx said the proletarians must reform their thinking and fight to topple oppressive structure. Meanwhile, Susilo said that the mental revolution initiated by Jokowi was aimed to change people’s character without bloodshed.
“I fully support the idea. I may not agree with Jokowi all the time, and it’s quite common. We have to respect each other,” Susilo said.
Susilo reminded that a revolution involves a massive, fundamental change and, sometimes, armed conflict, while the definition of mental is related to mindset.
“So, if I may conclude, the mental revolution is a fundamental and total revolution of people’s mindset to realize a successful nation within 10 or 20 years,” he said.
