Indonesia Considers US Attack Against Iraq to be Illegal

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian government considers the planned attack by the US and its allies against Iraq to be illegal unless it is approved by the UN. We are worried about the US efforts giving the impression that diplomatic efforts have failed and the only solution is waging a war, said Marty Natalegawa, the spokesperson of the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Department, responding to President George W. Bushs 48-hour deadline for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq. Obviously, any measures taken without UN permission is illegal, Natalegawa added. According to him, the UN weapons inspection team is the first victim of the US threat of war. On Monday evening, President Bush asked all foreign citizens to leave Iraq after he gave an ultimatum for Saddam and his family to leave Iraq or he has to face the US attack. Natalegawa said that the Indonesian Embassy in Baghdad has been temporarily closed since Monday (17/3). The diplomatic staff have already been moved to Syria but two Indonesian students have refused to leave Iraq. (AFP/Wahyu Dhyatmika Tempo News Room)
